Day Zero - The Vacation of a Lifetime

Postby sphenodont » 09 Aug 2014, 08:43:29

You can't believe it, but you're almost there. This bus is a veritable death-trap, and your jaw is rattling with every bump and turn in the road, but the hairs on your neck are rising. You look around at all the others here, and you're sure they are just as burning with excitement as you are. But are you sure that this is anticipation you're feeling, or is it apprehension?

Something isn't right here, you know.

"AAAAAllll right, buddy!" You're shaken out of your thoughts by your best friend giving you an oh-so-friendly whack across the back. "Can you believe it? This is crazy!!"

"Crazy is one word for it," you reply.

"Awesome is another, ain't it?" Your best friend passes you a flask. "Here, have some liquid courage."

"I'm good, thanks. It's not like we can back out now, is it?" you tell him. "In ten minutes, it's us, the bulls, and a long, long run to safety."

"Shit, man, I'm not worried about the bulls. I'm talking about how you've been a complete pussy this whole time. You-know-who has been sitting not two seats away and you haven't said more than two words! And I even switched places on the plane with you!"

Your stomach drops. He's right, but what can you do? Just the thought of h— ah, forget it. It's not worth wasting the time thinking about things that won't happen. That person doesn't even know you're alive...

Time to change the subject. "Hey, did you see that guy in the back? Doesn't he look familiar?"

"Him? I'm pretty sure I saw him on the news. I think he's some big political fundraiser or something." Your friend turns his head and points his thumb back a couple of rows. "What about that geezer? What do you give his chances of not getting gored?"

You take a look. The guy is definitely gray, and you're about to agree when your eyes lock with his. The flint in his gaze gives you second thoughts. "Maybe he's a little tougher than he looks?"

"Don't think I don't know what you're doing, changing the subject like that, by the way..."

"Yeah, you got me..." you sigh, resigning yourself to another barrage of harrassment. "How much longer do we have?"

"I have no idea, all of these brochures are in some bizarre moon language," your friend replies, fanning out a bunch of crumpled pamphlets. "Don't they know we're Americans?"

Your eyes narrow. Why would the brochures be in Cyrillic? "Well, it was a discount travel agency. Maybe the last group through here was Russ—"

You're interrupted by a bright flash in your eyes. You blink in confusion until you realize the guy in the seat in front of you has just blinded you with his iPhone flash. "Hashtag vacation of a lifetime, baby! So, you got a few words for my readers, pal?"

Your friend shouts in his face, "Yeah, how about you write a post about how you shoved your camera in someone's face and they shoved it up your ass!" He grabs the pasty-faced blogger. "You're never guess what happens next!"

You are about to reply when a sickly sweet smell hits your nose. "Hey, you guys smell.... whoah."

Yep, it's pot.

George wasn't having a good time. These business conferences for Happy Time were deathly. And she was pretty sure this plane was vintage Iron Curtain. Cheap seats. She reminded herself that flying was statistically safer than walking down the street. Maybe but you didnt usually walk down the street at 30,000 feet. She rolled her eyes, its not like she could do anything about it. If the plane went down then everybody was screwed. She didn't envy the crew that would have to sort out that mess, burn skin and liquefied remains... yeah good times. Then a guy lit up a few rows ahead of her, she wondered what would happen if she shoved it down the guys throat. This job was so getting to her...

OMG!

SO LIKE, I was over at Burger King and there were all these boys.

One of them totally whistled at me.

Actually.

I don't know if it was a whistle.

But.

One was super cute.

He looked like my ex, Brad.

You know, Brad?

The super hot footballer.

Brad <3

Anyway.

It was literally the worst day of my life.

(( For those of you who don't know because you're across the pond or hate humor, Shawn and Gus are from Psych, a long-running TV series most notable for the chemistry and funny dialogue between them. ))

I can't believe I let you talk me into this, Shawn.

What are you talking about? You always step up when Jules bails out on me.

Yeah, and every time I do somebody ends up getting killed.

C'mon son, that happens all the time anyway.

I've just got a bad feeling about all this. It's making me nervous.

Obviously. That woman has been sitting near us for like four hours and I still haven't heard "Hey, did you hear about Pluto? That's messed up."

So Stacy at school is spreading rumours about me.

Stacy?

She's the flat chested whore in 3B.

Eugh.

Also my mom said I can't go to the party this week because my idiot brother needs looking after.

I swear sometimes they don't know how hard it is to be me.

Eugh.

Penultimate destination? That sounds like so anticlimatic.

Imagine.

George winced at the toilet comment. Seriously was a damned toilet seat going to follow her for all eternity. She shook her head, haters would get theirs soon enough. Her thoughts went to Delores and her advice before leaving the office. "If folks don't accept you for who you are, then be somebody else, Mille." Why was she even entertaining the wisdom of an office drone? Was this flight over yet? She needed some coffee and a waffle.

So like, I was waiting in line to get a coffee, tall decaf mocha with extra cream, when the jerk who worked there said something you won't believe.

I told him it was decaf because I'm on that diet that I saw in Elle. It makes you super skinny.

Anyway, he tells me it won't make me skinny.

I mean, can you believe?

I told the manager he was harassing me and I got the coffee for free.

It really didn’t matter if you said your prayers to a benevolent god, paid forward some kind of karma, or just kept to yourself and did no harm. You were a manifestation of that which you held to be self-evident, that if you lead a good life, things would just kind of work out. That you could sustain, even in the worst circumstances. That no matter what, at least the universe wasn’t out to get you.

Sometimes, you were wrong, and an echo persists of the darker times: the cold shiver “like someone walked over my grave”, the quiet sense of unease you can explain, but decline to do so because that brings it all back.

I looked around at the other passengers on the bus. It’s amazing how clinical things are as you operate on automatic, disconnected, watching yourself from a distance as you gather your luggage, transiting from the secure section of the airport to the curbside that was anything but. You shake your head no to the man offering pot and dodge the distracted girl taking selfies. It’s interesting how that other you makes it look easy - he takes care of the details. Details - there’s so damn many of them and no one else seems to be able to cover them. It’s interesting how the amalgamation of days replays itself. The mass of many days into one.

No one here knew - it was intentional, and likely for the best. Because sometimes the echoes ring louder & those close to you know something is wrong. There’s risk of fight or flight that injures your friends as you keep your head above the waves. Sometimes you step away rather than let them in.

Because you've been burned, because you could never lead them to the darker places where you yourself refuse to go. Were time travel possible, you know exactly what would change, regardless of the cost. It would be someone else, the details important only to you and that person.

You can’t change the past – attempts to rewrite memories are sabotaged by the subconscious mind. You file things nice and neat during the day, but in the calm of night, the narrator is honest… and he will be heard.

More in a bit,

In addition, due to the number of players, I've adjusted the roles that will be in play and have shifted around some of the predictions. I will PM everyone in the morning with their current/modified predictions, which you are welcome to change further.

The following roles have been removed from the game:
Overachiever
Sous-Chef
Hell's Angel
B-List Actress
Rodeo Clown
SuperPAC Treasurer
Slashfic Author
Blogger
Old T'ai Chi Ch'uan Master

GM Note: PMs with updated predictions are going out.

I will say that after the Reapers were selected, we were left with three valid potential seers.

Keep in mind, that was with an extra prediction that has been dropped, so the numbers are much better now, but I still strongly recommend that you reconsider some of your choices. Also, while you may be tempted to hit random.org for your choices, it might help to choose more strategically and pick players who you think will die early, who you can convinve others should die early, and who might last until the late stages of the game.

Also, the Altruist / GA role has been dropped due to what I'd like to call "complexity".

I think I'm still confused slightly on the mechanics:

I have a list of roles that I assign. Somewhere, sphenodont has a list of roles and the order in which they die. I'm not sure how to intelligently apply my assignments to that ~order. Does my personal role list have some kind of ordering to it as well? From what I can tell, I'm going to know that "The Role" dies tomorrow, and I should attempt to get Player that I assigned to The Role lynched and/or mauled at that time. If I have some special roles, I guess that applies (Love Interest, etc). I guess I wasn't thinking there was a really viable strategy in there. I'm just hoping I don't randomly pick someone who randomly gets picked as a Reaper.

Well, you do know that the best friend, love interest, and psychic (you) die last. I think in that order but I might have flipped best friend / love interest. The rest you should expect to die in early or mid game.

Here be hopefully useful information

There is a list with fifteen roles on it in the order that those roles will die. Nine of those roles are potential targets for predictions. The Best Friend and Love Interest will be the last two (before the Psychic) to die. Assuming no wrinkles, the Best Friend would be the Day Eight maul. I'm sure there will be wrinkles. (i.e. If a Reaper gets killed, that would change the prospective lynches into mauls.)

Your other picks include:
either the Day One or Day Two Lynch
the Day 4 Lynch
either the Day Four or Day Five Maul
either the Day Seven or the Day Eight Lynch

That is still a fairly wide spread, and you can't predict which players will end up being wolves. However, you can try to put some likely survivors for the Best Friend and Love Interest, and as I start revealing which deaths are upcoming, you can try to make deals to get certain people killed on the days you would need.

I think I understand the rules but I'm not sure how there could only be 3 possible valid seers unless you've leaked information about the reapers.

I.e. if I go into the thread with my predictions and everyone else does too, we can figure out who the reapers are by cross-correlating information to see which group of people cannot be seers and which can after a days or so, can't we?

And in truth, our best bet would be to have only 1 possible seer because we know he has to die last according to the rules of the game. So the fewer choices we have, the better off we are in terms of creating a paradox early which would leave more of us alive.

Now sphen can just re-randomize the reapers after giving us this info and we'll end up with an unknown number of seers again which is why I'm not telling anyone to keep their picks as is but I'd advise not telling us the number of possible seers again.

Did I miss something?

All these sad-sack, soon-to-be spooks have no idea what's about to hit 'em. Group deaths are always so chaotic, like a room full of toddlers all crying for attention, nobody gets their private moment to accept, it's a real shame... also a shame Red's suddenly gone blonde and taken on some sort of contract work? As if we don't already get enough spiritual fulfillment on a daily beat.

I will state up front that I have no idea how this will work out. It's a rough idea that I'm running with, but I've tried to run it by a few people.

While it is possible to piece together the Reapers if everyone shares their predictions, it would be (theoretically) very difficult, since the number of predictions have been pared down and because you'd have to get everyone to honestly share. Giving that information gives a lot of ammo to the Reapers, who would be able to use that information to kill potential seers with the maul.

Another point is that there is no victory in dying, in this game. If you die, you are excluded from a team win. (You would actually earn a personal win if you die as a resolved Psychic in a Reaper team win, but it's your next of kin who get to spend the insurance money, not you.)

That said, any strategy is worth trying. I have no idea if this thing will work out, remember? :)

Remember as well, the potential seers won't be told they're invalid - so that (I think) protects the Reapers a bit. You would know you're invalid if you say "Bob's the Weird Uncle" and it ends up as Bill instead, but there won't be an obvious "You can't be the seer because you picked Reapers".
