Feature Request/General Problems Thread

Postby Omega » 13 May 2013, 13:52:24

A summation of issues/problems addressed:

Avatar Size is 215x215
Board Time now includes seconds by default, however, your preferences (in the UCP) may over ride this setting

Styles
    prosilver (Default)
    dark fantasy
    proskygray
    subsilver2
    se_gamer dark

Languages
Added American English – This causes problems with certain styles (including se_gamer_dark)

Tags
I've added Spoiler and Strike Through phpBB tags.

Smilies
:eyebrow: :flail:
Also, fixed for wolves ;)

Proposed
Karma Mod - Won't happen until at least phpBB 3.1
Better Notification E-mails - probably won't happen
Migrate Old Games - need Dys' assistance on this

this is minor, but the old notification emails said who made the reply, and if easy, I'd like for that to come back.

Also, we need the :flail: and D: and :eyebrow: emoticons.

especially the :flail: now that I'm apparently a vampire

Old PMs meaning TWG v1 or v2?

I'll see what I can do about the emoticons.

[e] Which one is the D: you're looking for?

I know v2, I'm not sure about v1. I don't have any PMs from that one anymore.

v1 didn't include PM text in the email body. It's an SMF thing, though there might be a plugin...?

Games disappearing from the original TWG site a sign of them being migrated over here, or something more nefarious?

e: That more nefarious being "I wasn't logged in". The scoundrel!

I wish. Will have to work with Dys to see if he'll give me a copy of the DB.

Personally, I use paint.net. With Chrome (not sure about Firefox) you can copy the image direct to the clipboard without saving it first. Then you can crop and resize however you want. That's also what I do those occasional pony cartoons in.

++ to paint.net, assuming you're on Windows. It's not Photoshop-level, but it'll do pretty much whatever you would need it to, without sucking huge amounts of resources.

The old board did have a resize/crop ability, but I don't know if PHPbb does or if it's a plugin.

Well look at that shit.

So I changed the default board setting, however, individual settings will override this, so you will have to go in and manually change it.

This was a side-effect in the "War on Meta-Gaming" and should only affect players (In other words, the permission denial is coming from the Human Group*) So, once you die you should be able to see the Member list again. There are a couple of other things that this denial is (supposed to be) picking up, including, in theory "Who's Online" but I'm still seeing it, not sure if that's because an Admin permission is over-riding it or what.

*Before anyone thinks this is confirmation of Dferr's humanity, ALL Players are added to the human group, so Humans/Wolves/Sekrit Factioners should be getting the denial.

Well, I certainly appreciate your fight against meta gaming. That said, if dropping the "who's online" is pain then I'm not sure it's worth it. It's not like the post counts that are pretty damming, because there are a thousand and one reasons someone might be online without posting. They might be just reading the day threads, or even looking at some other previous game.

During the last game, I was spending a lot of time looking at the one before that to try to get a feel of what did and didn't work. I don't think you can extrapolate anything from that.

Even those are affected, at least for sphen, ICB, Rave, Dom and me, by the Admin board. As has been discussed many times, meta-gaming is of questionable value at best.

I think I don't have my permissions set like that, since I'm not playing -- so I can't see how it appears in game. But I kind of frequently use that Members list. The usual reason is to go back and look at their consolidated post history (I thought he said earlier that... or has he posted anything about... or what was his claimed reason for the other thing...). It's much easier to do that than dig through pages of posts looking for something with a name on it that I can click.

Admetus, if you are not in the Human Group (which it sounds like you're not, if you aren't playing) you should not be affected by the Memberlist denial/Who's Online, etc.

I'm aware -- that's why I don't know if what I would have in a game would be just fine as well. I'm just worried I'll have to go reading posts in sequence like some commoner, when sometimes what I'm looking for is just a post history from one person. Fastest way to get there is through the memberlist, the slower way is to go looking for some post the person has made somewhere, then click in to get options like "read messages from this user."

Does nobody else need to do this? It's very handy if you know who said a thing but not when exactly it was said.

There is progress, it looks like. Some.

You've done SOMETHING right as far as the Overlords go; I cannot see users logged in as hidden (which by default I always am). So we're getting somewhere.

I'd found some lines to plug into templates a few weeks ago; any luck with working with that?

By the way, I do strongly encourage everyone to read the metagame post again and contemplate logging in as hidden. Takes just a few seconds, one time, and you'll never worry about it again.

It is a template by template basis and it seemed to work better in some than others. I haven't gotten around to finishing all of the templates though.

I'm also going to double the size for avatars to 64k, is that enough or do you Post Whores need more than that?

Word amongst the dead is that they're still able to post to the Day thread. Doesn't need to be fixed now, but something to look at between games or the like.

Mortus - your group permissions are set just like anyone else's, so I think beyond my pay-grade as to why you can't edit.

Any chance of giving more ~PM folders to the GMs? I've been keeping a folder with each day's targeting, but I ran out. I can reuse folders, not a big deal, but if it's quick & easy to do, it helps me keep some history intact. I'm that guy that doesn't ever delete an email at the office :D

Next question / feature request, low priority from my perspective:

In forum2 (not sure about forum1), when I received a PM notification via email, it contained the body of the PM (or at least some abstract). With forum3, I just receive the clickthrough link telling me I have a PM. Would be super-dandy if we could get the PM text in that email.

Definitely a default feature of SMF and not phpBB (v1 didn't have it, and neither does Arstechnica). I think this has been mentioned before? Feel like it has. Anyhow... I'll do some looking and see if there's a solution, but right now I'm not counting on it. There doesn't appear to be a button we can press to change it. Maybe a plugin...?

For the record, though, I like the idea as well.

It has been mentioned before, and we discussed it in the Back Room.

My concern is that mod seems to change phpBB on a more fundamental level than some of the surface changes I've made so far. When the 3.1 upgrade to phpbb comes out, I want a seemless upgrade, so I'll likely wait to do this.

Is there anyway to tweak the search function to allow more general queries? If I wanted to search for any posts that someone made which referenced a specific player I get a message about the search criteria being too common. It's fine for searching for all posts from a poster but trying to limit it down with a keyword seems to break it.

I think the sign-up thread for the next game should be upgraded to an "Announcement," to better ensure that everyone sees it.

Sticky-blindness is a bitch, though...

Someone knows if the 2nd forum will be up or backed up? It would be a shame to lose the record of the psychopath vs psychopath showdown between Clear and Ionitor.

Nice to have: newer games up top, older games archived down low (or is that a theme-specific thing?)

It's always been manually done. Sorry for the oversight, we fixed it.

It looks like whatever outage was temporary. It's currently up.

We're still deciding on the feasibility of importing all the old games.

Is there any hope of being able to collapse the game headings to hide the sub-forums? I really liked that feature in the last iteration, handy for de-cluttering the front page.
edit: Well, 3 seconds with Google turned this up.

That looks nice.

I do think, barring installation of that plugin, we'll do what we did with v1: Old games (more than 2-3 games old) will go under a header of "Older TWG," and the current game will always sit at the top of the list (right below the Village Pub).

That is phpbb 3.0.9, I'd rather not install it until 3.1 comes out... In the meantime, I moved the old game into a category and will move Necklessone's in when Ozy starts his.
