Unicorn Twilight. None of that rage inducing twilicorn crap for me!

RaveBomb wrote:Glad for the happy ending. Hopefully no damage to the car?

The ignition is broken, but it shouldn't be too much work to get it fixed, and the insurance will cover it anyway. Just super annoying, much like missing a vote snipe by literally 2 seconds.

Also, I feel somewhat insulted the car was abandoned. Like, what, isn't my car worth stealing? twdog's car: so crappy even car thieves don't want it.

The Alicorn thing didn't bother me so much - I was more surprised about it than anything else. But yea, Uni version is cool. *brohoof*

Personally, I always use cars that aren't that expensive either. It 'not worth being stolen' is practically a feature! Besides, if they left it at another crime destination that shows what their true goal was - to have a dump vehicle. Makes me wonder if they stole a car at the next location too. *shrug* regardless, glad you got it back man!

[e]: Actually, I've had a car get broken into once. I was working as a waiter at a comedy club and came out to see some moron had broken a side window of my roughly 8-10 year old Mazda 626 (not fancy). I called police and found that they'd broken into my car and started to try and steal my factory-standard radio/cassette player and given up (I presume in disgust). The only indication the car had been broken into was the smashed window, a partially detached panel for the center column where the radio was and the theft of my change in the car (which would've been less than $2.00). The cop and I had a fair bit of a laugh about it (he got me to see the humor in it - I was pissed at first and then horribly confused why they would even bother) so, I'm glad your situation wasn't too bad either.

So we fired one of my fellow sysadmins today, for reasons I thought I'd never actually see used in my lifetime (outside of a tiny startup, anyway):

Mediocrity.

The guy had the technical chops to do the job, but his attention to detail was such that he'd average about one minor overlooked deployment step or "oops" moment a week (always for someone else to clean up, but never anything huge or mission-critical). Add to that a tendency to show up late for scheduled after-hours work (or, as one of the final nails in the coffin, completely no-show) and he certainly earned a pink slip after many, many chances and a lot of effort put into "development plans". Which is a damn shame, because it would've taken such a tiny amount of extra effort on his part to shape up, and yet...

My melancholy at losing someone that *should* have been good at his job is mixing oddly with the notion of working for a company that's actually willing to fire someone for being a modest-but-definite burden on his team. Gross incompetence? Sure, that' s a no-brainer to get rid of. But it's surprising (in a mostly-pleasant sense) to finally find a company willing to do the long-term math on lost productivity/efficiency/morale and take pre-emptive steps.

What a weird mix of melancholy/joy today as a result. (Also, yay, more time on-call now. Blech)

I lost two hours of my morning trying to deal with a project I inherited in the middle where the work that was already done was poorly documented and with goals that have been shifting for four months. I think things are finally locked down, but it's times like this I marvel that we have a core competency of "dealing with ambiguity" instead of "communicating shit clearly the first time".

So today I'm traveling to Mexico for my annual Visa renewal. Seems they had overbooked the plane so they seated me in First Class. It was awesome. Full free breakfast and the space. Zomg. The leg space. I felt like a successful person.

That's by far the best part of first class; all the other perks are nice and all, but that one over shadows all others. But I feel bad for you, because now that you've been out of cattle class, on future flights you'll either need to spend more to get humane seating, or you'll by crammed in with the steerage miserably thinking of this time you flew 1st.

---

In other news, I've been doing some research that's been taking me way back into the musty depths of usenet, and I've been reading posts from the late 80s and early 90s. Most of it seems reasonable enough, but I occasionally run across people making royal jackasses of themselves, and it amuses me that 25 years later we can still laugh at their fuckwittery.

Then I cringe at the thought that in 25 years people will still be able to read dumbass things I've written.

Given that I am next to move from Queue to "On Deck" I may actually spend this week working on my game.

It will no longer be vanilla. Because if you expected me to run a vanilla game, you haven't been paying attention.

She's the one who ends up jumping up from the audience to help me hold up the word choices for the Wolves' Echo rule.

Also, don't feel bad, I'm sure everyone makes fun of Dferr for the toe shoes! If there are any Giant Bomb fans around here, you'd enjoy knowing that he was even directly called out for them by the late Ryan Davis, who notoriously hated toe shoes, at a pre-pax Rock Band event.

Came in early for a remote session with a vendor in France. I get in, & he says his internet is down, so he'll head into the office - should only take him an hour, turns into 2 (apparently there's traffic in France - heads up). Work actually starts after my normal start time.

I did get plenty done during the quiet time in the office at least. Setting up ubunto HA Proxy for the win...

I choose to read this thread out of order:

I only have one pair of those, and I like to save them for very special occasions.

I've been pulling triple-duty as a dev lead for the last ~6 months, effectively running three teams instead of one. High-stress, but with an end in sight (large project that they brought me in on to clean up and keep on track after it was tracking ~a year behind on a nine-month schedule). Stressful, busy, but manageable - my boss was doing a great job of keeping other teams from nickel/diming me on other stuff.

Until he resigned last week.

So now I'm also brushing up my resume to take a stab at his old position (which his boss has been nudging me at since the resignation was announced). Completely committing myself to the dark side now, but in the end, it's actually going to be *less* work than I'm doing right now (although I'd like to finish off the giant project before I step in to that role).

I'm thinking it's a very good move for me, but change, etc., etc.

Congrats and good luck. It's a heck of an adjustment to go from 'best do-er' to 'manager.' Especially if you will be overseeing a team comprised of former coworkers. You will be shocked and amazed at some of the trivial things that get escalated to you, and the major things that fly under the radar.

The golden rule seems to apply heavily, and even if it's dated, Carnegie's 'Winning Friends and Influencing People' is a pretty good place to start.

I've been on the darkside 3 years and counting, at times I miss being a single contributor, but being able to challenge and implement policy makes it all worthwhile.

Good luck with the move. That would be a scary change for me.

Congrats on your probably-impending promotion DOM!
Pumas on Hoverbikes is a worthy and relevant meditation on being a technical manager. You may find it rather amusing. :)

I'd like to thank United Airlines for cancelling ALL THE FLIGHTS and therefore scrapping our much-needed vacation.

Also, I'd like to express my appreciation to AirBNB for having absolutely shitty, anti-guest cancellation policies, which allow the hosts to keep ALL THE MONIES.

So... back at work, trying to keep from pulling out ALL THE HAIR. (Someone elses, not mine.)
