Day 2: Cage Match

Postby necklessone » 03 Sep 2013, 18:15:49

"So, have we decided on the answer," Nick asks, theatrically glancing at his watch. "Because time…is….up!"

The lights flash and wave. Some tech has way too much time on their hands. The giant screen behind Nick stops displaying the Wolfing Game logo and tallies up the votes for the day.

FurinMirado - 6 - Omega, Mister E. Meat, Mortus, twdog, Ozymandias, Ionitor
Ionitor - 4 - Okaros, Iron Clad Burrito, Visigoth, Rictus
simple_simon - 4 - Griffypoo, Aldax, Smirker, Ryvvn
Ryvvn - 3 - Meta4, Wasabi, sphenodont
Hellheart - 2 - blindsniper83, redead
Ozymandias - 2 - Nitestorm, dferrantino
Admetus - 1 - DastardlyOldMan
Meta4 - 1 - leiden
Mortus - 1 - RaveBomb
Nitestorm - 1 - Admetus
RaveBomb - 1 - Hellheart
rekard - 1 - simple_simon
San - 1 - stigmata
stigmata - 1 - FurinMirado
twdog - 1 - San
Visigoth - 1 - rekard

The spotlights cycle through a few colors and then all but one extinguish, leaving FurinMirado in the sad blue light.

"I'm so sorry, Furin, but this is the point in the show where I have to send you away. But don't worry, you're not going back to the motel empty handed. In your room you'll find a six-pack of Milwaukee's Best on ice, courtesy of our sponsors. Actually, two six packs because we're not going to send you home alone. Those darn wolves have decided who among you is the most dangerous player. And then they flipped a coin and Wasabi, I'm going to have to ask you to drop your buzzer."

Large pictures of Wasabi and Furin appear on the screen. Wasabi's picture reads "Contestant" while Furin's reads "Contestant".

The audience claps politely as the two players begin to walk off the stage. The curtains part as they near them, revealing a giant metal cage full semi-blunt weapons. Furin and Wasabi stop, confused. Nick just chuckles politely.

"I think these two deserve another chance, don't you?" he asks the audience. "We've prepared a special treat for tonight: inside this cage are a number of keys that will let you back into the game. Any player who finds a key and unlocks a gate is welcome to take their podium back."

Now the audience is into it. Wasabi and Furin are escorted towards the cage by security staff that has appeared out of nowhere. As is Mister E. Meat?!

Nick grins. "Our studio audience has voted for the player they most want to see compete in the cage portion of the game. Mister E. Meat is their champion! And if you want to watch at home, go to forum.thewolfgame.net and enter your credit card, social security, and date of birth. Full access via our live stream can be yours for just $59.99."

"And while that's going on, why don't we distribute those dossiers, penalties, and get the next day started."

The lights dim and a spotlight illuminates Nick.

"So, contestants: who are the wolves?"

FurinMirado, Lynched - Contestant
Wasabi, Mauled - Contestant
Mister E. Meat - Voluntary Wrath of God

Can we just pretend that we've already argued about this and moved on? You don't have to change your vote, I just don't want to replay the argument.

On the plus side, next time I can just link to this game.

In case things get busy again tomorrow (which they likely will), I'll toss out a vote for Iron Clad Burrito right now. Mostly because voting for me seems to be a wolf-tell on occasion.

I was expecting the full list of player roles, per my earlier request. Assuming the fact that I didn't get one is your answer, I shall now follow through with my threat to do unspeakable things to the gummy vitamins in my pantry.

"Annnd, we're back! Seems our red friend avoided any additional roughing up, we've got Mo standing by with him; Mo!"

"That's right, Mike, I'm here with Ryvvn who's looking a little shaken at the moment; what's going through your head right now?"

"Honestly, once one vote was pitched my way, I'm not surprised a few more followed, considering my triumph last competition; however, I was a bit nervous being a part of those top tier ties so close to buzzer. I think I'm going to pace myself a little better today, no need to always be jumping the gun in this particular race."

"Wise words from such a fresh up-and-comer; back to y--"

"Oh wait, one more thing?!"

"Yes, please continue..."

To the person who PM'd me yesterday: sorry, wasn't trying to burn you, but was a little too late.

I think you should like chill and not jump out at the first vote cast on you. Makes you look too defensive. If you get more votes, then you can whine. In the meantime, work on whitening your teeth. Or fangs, if you are a wolf.

Nobody-- I just wanted a shot at the shiny blue envelope prize that our host mentioned at the start of Day 1.

So if there had been a clear lynch leader, I would have piled on to him no matter the margin.

But since it was tied, I picked Furin because: (a) I figured Ionitor was most likely to snipe, and (b) I feel like I have a better read on simon's play style as a Wolf than Furin's (for example, you and simon were the only two Wolves I had consistently pegged in my messages to the Dead thread last game).

The others went to sleep already, but I think that Kawayuka said that our manager said that the producers want us to vote for rekard today, because he is obsessed with teeth, has a death wish, and kinda asked for it.

I'm going to vote for Nitestorm because I wasn't here last game, and frankly, I think a wolf voted for you too, Ozy.

I also believe that Ryvvn's doing us all a service by bringing GUTS back into our milieu. So voting for him is wrong, stupid and communist.

Suddenly, an alarm goes off. The curtains part and reveal a battered and bloody FurinMirado holding a large golden key. He silently walks over to Mister E. Meat's former podium and continues playing as if nothing happened to him.

(OOC: Random.org has awarded Furin the WoG spot; he has whatever role MEM had. Since everyone voted yesterday, Wasabi has been sent to the dead thread.)

I feel bad going two days in a row without voting for RaveBomb, but I think the dogpile on Furry was suspicious for day one. You guys always lecture me about the importance of keeping an even keel on day one, but there is nothing even about six votes.

Ionitor, why did you jump on the Furry bandwagon?

The Networkers have to be careful. They're probably the most important human special, just take a look at the Human Alliance effect from last game. As I read the rules, a seer -- including the Professional Seer -- will see Networker (and Paparazzi and Cousin) as Contestant. So, they have a reasonably big population to hide among, and if they talk to a wolf they blow it.

I was thinking about the numbers. Nobody is going to share their visions just yet (and give the wolves a target list), but for later...

31 starting players

Typical number of wolves would be 8. Does "Too Many Seers" have extra wolves to account for all the seers? I don't think so but wouldn't be surprised if that was a thing. This number would include the wolf seer, wolf vig, handsome devil, power blocker, and Oxford comma.

15 seer types listed on the rules thread. According to necklessone in the signups thread, this list has "at least 25% fakes." So that makes 10-11 seers a reasonable guess. One of those is already counted as a wolf.

Necklessone also said there would be extra vigs. And with the Networker being pretty limited, there are probably a few of those as well. Maybe more vigs between the two roles.

31 players
8 wolves
9-10 human seers
3 Paparazzi (vigilante)
3 Networker (PM)
1 Cousin (jailer)
1 Cosmic Joke
4-5 regular Contestants?

Fudge up or down if you disagree with the numbers of human specials, but the number of seers feels about right to me. It depends on whether they were set up to be 10 including the wolves or 10 without the wolves, but 10 is a nice number.

But either way, one of the points of bringing all this up today instead of later is that the two dead people were both regular Contestants. So the big question is whether we've were lucky enough to lose nearly half of the regulars, which is just about the best we could expect for a Day 1, or are my numbers misleading me?

I don't have a good lynch vote yet. I'll probably look at how the votes are developing a little later on and see if anything sticks out to me.

Ionitor, why did you jump on the Furry bandwagon?

Because I wanted to live? I was ready to vote for Furin regardless of what else happened at EOD, and I've often advocated strategic voting for survival.

There's a part of me that really, really wants to argue that FurinMirado should be lynched today because he was partially responsible for lynching FurinMirado yesterday. I just can't bring myself to do it, though. If it was our GM, on the other hand...

I vote Nitestorm for blatant smiley abuse. Only a wolf would use that many smilies.

Admetus, I would be surprised if necklessone made a game with 4-5 regular players. At that point, he may as well come up with a few more roles and make this an actual Everybody's Special game, rather than leaving just a few players out. I think you're overestimating the duplication of some of the non-seer roles, and potentially the number of seer roles.

I could go lower on seers (9 human, 1 wolf), and networkers. Make it 2 human, 1 wolf networker. But I have a hard time imagining fewer than 3 human, 1 wolf vigilantes. That's only a couple more than "normal" for the larger game, and there's an entire (potential) seer type devoted to vigilante hunting.

That would be 6 regulars. It's small but significant, and two regular deaths on Day 1 still sticks out.

-edit-
Now at this point among the expected 8 wolves, there would be one each of seer, power blocker, handsome devil, networker, vigilante (and maybe jailer?). With 5-6 specials for them, there's only 2-3 regular wolves. Isn't that number low enough that the same argument would apply to them -- why not just make a few more special roles? Either the regulars serve a purpose thematically, and that's good enough, or I would also be overestimating the number of special wolves?

Also -- this game definitely doesn't have echoes, does it? That was in the game linked as an example. It doesn't seem to have room for them.

Admetus wrote:But the number of seers feels about right to me. It depends on whether they were set up to be 10 including the wolves or 10 without the wolves, but 10 is a nice number.

To me, the magic number is likely 8:

8 Wolves (Seer + Power Blocker + Paparazzi + Networker + Handsome Devil + 3 Vanillas)
8 Human Seers
8 Human Specials (Jailer + 3 Paparazzi + 3 Networkers + Cosmic Joke)
7 Human Vanilla Contestants

Note that in this scenario, there would be 8 players who thought they were Vanilla Contestants (since the Cosmic Joke doesn't know he's special), so this distribution has a certain symmetry ...

Whoops, took way too long on my edit above. Short version -- if we have a token number of vanilla wolves, why not a token number of vanilla contestants?

I'll take token minorities for $300 please.

RaveBomb

Who is a standard contestant forced to play only with his stunning intellect?

Correct

I'll take missed opportunities for $200 please.

Probably needs a vengence vote

redacted was Meta4

I'm Brick Tamland. People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks. Years later, a RaveBomb will tell me that I have an I.Q. of 48 and am what some people call mentally retarded.

Considering the shenanigans last night, do you really want to be the one going on the offensive? That said, I don't think you'd be that obvious about saving a fellow wolf, so I'm going to let this slide.

That said, between Ionitor and simon, I can't imagine one of them isn't a wolf, so Ionitor it is.

I agree that there must have been a wolf on the FurinMirado bandwagon.

There were 2 people whose vote was a tie-breaker on FurinMirado:

Mortus
Ozymandias

Since he has snuck under the radar so far I'm going with Mortus.

Also, more bandwagons.

I agree that Mortus is a likely candidate, as is the player formerly known as Mister E. Meat. Who is that, again? :P

So, I just deleted another stupidly argumentative post, because I realized something: while I disagree with rekard and Meta4, their votes don't surprise me, but the argument I had in my head with dfer didn't sound like him at all. He knows that Ozy and I both tend to vote-snipe (at least when the deadline is before my early bedtime, and I'll especially do it for my own survival), and he knows that day 1 bandwagons are slightly-more-often-than-baseline not wolves (since the humans are blind and the wolves don't tend to push bandwagons on each other). So arguing that last nights events means that simon or I are surely wolves just looks like a nice way for him to put down some safe votes for a few days.

tl;dr: dferrantino.

Once upon a time, we had a rule. Maybe it was more of a guideline, but all the same, it was a tradition. Now, I know that the world of gaming has advanced and devolved and gone through transformations, but it seems to me that we can take our cue from the times of our forefathers.

Mortus, because - and read this part carefully - he is still alive.

There was talk up-thread about a wolf on Ozy's wagon. I don't think that's likely. Most of the wolf groups I've seen expect Ozy to get lynched by humans at some point, and they see it as a great place to go fishing for humans to frame. I'd expect the wolves to stay far away from voting on Ozy, and when they want him dead, they maul him.

I'm also willing to buy the excuse that people were jumping on any leading wagon at the end of Day 1 as a grab for possible prize envelopes. I hadn't thought of doing that myself, but really the best chance of catching a wolf would have been a late, large, mostly human wagon that was randomly correct. Still not a great chance, but the best chance at Day 1. In that case, though, any wolf on the wagon earlier would not have been able to move off without looking very suspicious. So I'd say the best place to find a wolf in (the original) FurinMirado's wagon would be in the first few votes, not the last ones. That's either Omega or MEM. Maybe as far as Mortus. I'll start with Omega.
