Day 1: Independence, Missouri

Postby The Fairy Catmother » 13 Sep 2016, 20:06:16

Image

It's a warm Spring afternoon in Independence. Mutual bull-riding lessons are all the rage. Man and bull become one, and while it's not what most would call a beautiful sight, legends of Rekard and Ricardo will be told for centuries to come.

A crowd begins forming in front the General Store, which for some reason is still closed. It's not like shop owner Okaros to not open up on time...the excitement grows as the townspeople began demanding answers. Finally, someone shouts, "Did anyone try just turning the doorknob?" Sure enough, the door isn't even locked.

The door swings open to reveal a horrible sight. There is blood splattered everywhere, and the display shelves are knocked off the walls. Supplies, trinkets, and bits of human flesh have been strewn about the floor. You lock eyes with the people next to you and realize you're all thinking the same thing - it's time to get the hell out of Dodge.

Quickly, you grab all the supplies you can carry. Most of it is covered in blood, but you don't care. Okaros would've wanted you to have this stuff anyway. One member of your party empties the cash register, and another yokes up the oxen to the wagons out back. You throw everything into one of them and set off for Oregon without even a farewell glance at your old home town.

They don't have wolves out west.

Decided to put this out a little early.
Day 1 will still end September 14 at 10 pm PT.

Did anyone think to bring the pieces of Okaros in a bag and bring him with us?

Lol.

I just noticed that Ricardo and Rekard sound alike. Total coincidence! Mind blown.

Anyways, I lead the caravan riding my loyal bull Ricardo. I notice that he's eating Zark's underwear. How did he know where Zark's underwear was? And how do I know it's Zark's unmentionables that he's so joyously chewing?

While I ponder, I realize that last night Ricardo was looking towards Rictus with eyes filled of either a very concentrated hate or some rather lusty urges.

If it's the first, maybe Ricardo is a wolf detector! If not, god damn it Ricardo. You are one sick bull.

So if it's the first:

Now onwards to the great West, to Chicago and New York, to Toronto and Lima! (Why did you guys make the Brit the navigator?)

The GM says this:

In case anyone missed it in Day 0, I've posted the rules in a separate thread. Please read them; this is not a typical game.

Someone needs to drive the bait first wagon. Just remember, if we run into any Plains Injuns, stand up and waves your arms vigorously. Shout a lot, too. It's how they greet each other.

GUYS I THINK I FOUND HIM. I FOUND THE TOWN DRUNKARD

Don't mind my yelling. It's not because we're all crammed on to the one little wagon here - and who the hell is driving the other wagons? - but it's because someone's gorram foot is somewhere where it really doesn't belong. The more I shift, the deeper it goes.

Wrong kind of furry friends :eyebrow:

Also, we can rebuild him. Them Fancy Injuns can help us see to it.

So, I admit to being a bit concerned by
#Vote for: Gungnir888
lack of pants. I've taken the liberty of blurring it for you (nothing ever gets deleted from the internet, just ask Anthony Weiner), but you're changing the subject. (Retracted, but I still say he needs some godsdamned pants)

Image

And I see I'm not the only one:

Subject: Day 0: The General Store

Admetus wrote:
The Fairy Catmother wrote:
Gungnir888 wrote:Huh. Do I accompany this band of crazies, who will apparently alternate between bull riding and bull ridden, or do I just stay here, and maybe open a general store?

Says the guy who bought bullets instead of pants.

This sounds fine to me. If you have enough bullets, you can get everyone else's pants. Plus, the food is mostly sitting around on the floor these days.

I could vote for Admetus who also seems to support this naturalist trend (or perhaps he meant to say you could get ~in~ everyone else's pants), but the gungan voted for me, so I guess he has dibs? Besides, staying here is not an option. I hear there's no wolves out west... the only ones will be whatever we bring with us. To that end, I stocked up:

Zark's Saddlebag wrote:8 - 1 Liter Water (with refillable canteen) 2lb
10 - MRE (various) 1lb
8 - Ironclad's lembas Bread 2lb
4 - 2 Person Sleeping bag 4lb
3 - Desert Eagle .50AE (no ammo) 3lb
1 - 7 round mag .50ae ammo 1lb
3 - Warne's Tactical Knife 3lb

Now the sleeping bag is a double, because I'm a big stallion. It's not for sharing. I am looking at you Rekard - don't get any ideas.

That's a pretty big gun you've got there Gungnir. With a gun like that, I have to ask if your name is really just Gnir and the ladies added the Gun because it's so impressive.

Anyhow, I guess my real question is, what are you compensating for?

I appreciate you all spreading your votes around as much as lupinely possible to give me something to grumble and moan about. It wouldn't be Day 1 if I wasn't able to make this speech.

13 votes on 11 targets is, yet again, an impressive Day 1 example of how to let the wolves run rampant all over us. As the resident old man, who's least likely to actually make it to the end of a backroads frontier trip (I swear I thought this wagon was for a gold rush), I'd like to curmudgeonly ask y'all to circle the wagons a bit more and consolidate the votes.

I've got
[+] Votes
Ryvvn - 2 - dferrantino, RaveBomb
necklessone - 2 - asbath, sphenodont
7-zark-7 - 2 - Gungnir888, DOM
Ravebomb - 1 - Ryvvn
Rictus - 1 - rekard
rekard - 1 - Clearasday
Aldax - 1 - Mister E. Meat
DastardlyOldMan - 1 - Jrsthethrid
asbath - 1 - Anzig
Clearasday - 1 - Omega
Gungnir - 1 - 7Z7

(sphenodont - your tally had me voting on CAD, that should've been Omega)

Now, according to The Gentleman's Rules of Engagement, RaveBomb (ran last game), Gungnir (Day 1 lynch), Admetus and twdog (Day 2 lynch/maul) are exempt from my perspective, as are a few new/returning folks. Of those with votes already (which is damn near everyone), I'll push 7-Zark-7 up for voting on the Day 1 lynch from last game, even if it is a revenge vote.

For those of you with singleton votes, we really want to get down to 4 or 5 wagons, instead of having everyone driving their own. Think about consolidating, please.

This is amusing because it's another singleton, but it sounds like you didn't think it was.

The later ones will look suspicious? Personally, I find shotgun Day 1 votes to mean multiple timid wolves hoping to avoid notice. You can look at the last game for an example (the lumberjack one at the bottom of the forums).

I'm not mandating anything, but trying to get useful data out of Day 1 is really, really difficult with a voting pattern like this. In the end, it hurts the humans to have scattered votes like this. If you're human, it's in your best interest to consolidate.

We've had numerous discussions on this for years now (I'm specifically looking for a long discussion about whether 3 or 5 bandwagons was optimal - I think between Ozy and Furin or something, but I'm not finding that one - it had the maths that Ozy always includes).

Was trying to understand this (did not realize you were the other voter on DOM until I saw yonder rollup).

Yeah, who the hell schedules EOD on Pacific time? I thought we were still in Missouri... unless the oxen are moving faster out of sheer fear of Rekard? :flail:

This is amusing because it's another singleton, but it sounds like you didn't think it was.

Bah, misread Anzig voting on someone else as a vote on Anzig. But the vote has been cast and cast it must be cast.

Well HELLO ALL!

We’re pretty excited about the upcoming trip, and soooo glad you didn't forget us in your haste to get the hell out of dodge. Me and a couple trillion of my family are hoping for a safe journey from Missouri. We've got a lot of work to do out on the trail, and we're SO BUSY right now multiplying, and multiplying, and multiplying, and...well, you know.

Currently not sure where we are. It’s dark in here. I mean, to be honest… I know WHERE we are, I just don’t know in who.

Now the Dastardly Old Man speaks some truth about Day 1, which means he's not a wolf. It means he's a helpful wolf. A completely different species.

FCM, I feel the need to ask - is this a viral conversion game?

Good point. EOD should have started in CST and moved backwards by an hour every two days so that we (hopefully) cross the border into Oregon in PST after Day 4.

Crap - upload to imgur is broken - I hope my office hasn't blocked it... I shall be most put out if so (postimg.org is an alternate, but doesn't bbcode).

Of substantially greater import, what is the "free fun" that timeanddate.com offers, and did they bring enough for the whole class?

Whoops my bad on timezones. That's twice I've done that this week, subtracting 3 hours from the Pacific to get my Eastern instead of adding it. Guess the end of day hasn't happened yet and instead will happen in 5 hours 15 minutes?

The GM says this:

Something has been brought to my attention, and I've made a necessary amendment to the rules regarding dysentery. You can refer to the rules thread for further explanation regarding my reasons.

Only the original target will be announced in the day thread, and they will now definitely die the next night. It will spread to 2 people, who now have a 60% chance of dying.
The town may still rest to better the prognosis for the two people that catch it, but the second tier infections will NOT BE ANNOUNCED until they are already dead. If they survive the spread, no one will know they had dysentery.

Also, to clarify the timeline:
Night 2: Dysentery used on target.
Day 3: It is announced in the day thread that target has dysentery.
Night 3: Target dies and random decides the fate of 2 more humans.
Day 4: Deaths are announced.

No mauls on nights 2 and 3.

I won't copy your red, but I will use a little of mine for emphasis. Can you please confirm that unlike the flood which can kill wolves, Dysentery only kills humans?

Sorry for making you spell it out, but I just know Campa is going to ask, and he's a little dense
