TWG XCI: What turned up

Postby twdog » 05 Jan 2016, 10:58:13

It’s the 27th century, and we turn our attention to the system of Kepler-14297, commonly known to it’s residents as k14k, an uninspired and somewhat inaccurate name. Actually, that’s not exactly true; what we’re really turning our attention to is the 4th planet, and more specifically, to the lone colony on that planet.

Founded by the Interstellar Energy Corporation over a century ago as a mining installation, the Inencosi colony is a collection of habitation surface domes atop a network of subterranean vaults, industrial facilities, and tunnels. While the residents were once exclusively corp employees, over the decades the population has significantly grown and many have become resentful that the minority of corp employees, actually the even more minority of corp appointed executive administrators, still rule by fiat.

There’s a VP of Inencosi operations, commonly called the governor, and he's a man with a lot on his plate. Concerns over of an irate population of non-staff? Hardly, this is a IEC operation, let's not forget that! No, the biggest concerns revolve around meeting quarterly targets because that's what stock analysts are looking at. Whiners keep forgetting what’s important.

There’s more: over 2 years ago the colony received a message that a commissioner from the government Bureau of Offworld Settlements was being dispatched for an inspection and audit. That was during the previous governor's administration, and was pretty much forgotten about, but after a 3 year cryosleep voyage that ship is will be arriving soon. Seriously people, can we not drop balls like this? Damn! Like there isn’t enough to do without dealing with some meddlers from Earth.

Anyway, it’s not that important, there’s more immediate issues. For instance, there’s that geology survey division that’s gotten all worked up about some junk they turned up on the planet’s moon. So now they want a bunch of resources, and for what? Look, if it’s not new mineral deposits then who really cares?

After the poker games on LV-426 went sour, I figured a trip out to a nice mining colony like k14k was just the ticket. Relax, lay low for a while, maybe get this nasty cough looked at. Sounds like a great plan, I just hope the locals aren't too boring. It'd be a terrible shame to have spent all this time in transit just to wind up with no fun to be had.

Twdog,

What's the source material? My Google-foo is not informative.

It's a ripped off totally original universe. This was originally going to be a medieval city under siege, but as I played around with it I decided the medieval setting was clashing with my mechanics. As I worked with the mechanics, I played around with a number of different settings, and last time around it actually was in the Alien universe. But then I ran into issues with clashs between what I wanted to do and movie canon, and I'm not including Xenomorphs, so I just went and did my own thing.

It's basically a blend of Aliens, System Shock 1, Power of the Daleks, Thing from Another World, and a few other odds and ends.

Aesthetically, I envision Inencosi as being sort of a cross between Hadley's Hope from Aliens and the Clavius Base from 2001.

Look, this is an emotional moment for all of us, okay? I know that. But, let's not make snap judgments, please. This is clearly-clearly an important species we're dealing with and I don't think that you or I, or anybody, has the right to arbitrarily exterminate them.

Listen up people! You are not in Equestria anymore. You are on k14k, ladies and gentlemen. Respect that fact every second of every day. If there is a Hell, you might wanna go there for some R & R after a tour on k14k. Out there beyond that fence every living thing that crawls, flies, or squats in the mud wants to kill you and eat your eyes for jujubes. We have an indigenous population of humanoids called the Werewolves. They're fond of teeth dipped in a neurotoxin that will stop your heart in one minute - and they have bones reinforced with naturally occurring carbon fiber. They are very hard to kill. As head of security, it is my job to keep you alive. I will not succeed. Not with all of you. If you wish to survive, you need to cultivate a strong, mental aptitude. You got to obey the rules: K14k rules. Rule number one...
If our team loses, it's going to be entirely your fault.-rekard
If you still end up losing after this, it's totally not your fault.-Hellheart

Seems appropriate. Although, if rekard is making the rules, it's going to get confusing.

I have not, but if you meant "an email," they can take some time to go out. If you just PM'd the group I'll have to get out my mallet of "it's not for PMs, it's for emails" and beat on my drum a bit.

Welcome back!

Rethinking my RP a bit. Wasabi & I used to have this running gag about "Screaming Paul Reiser Death". It was a frequent bot name in unreal tournament and others. I have no doubt if he were to show up, he'd kill me on principle for the avatar.

I know we were supposed to start today, sorry that didn't happen. There was an ... umm ... issue .... that came up at my work and I've been dealing with that all day. I only got home a short time ago, so I'm catching a bit of sleep and we'll launch tomorrow mid morning

Again, sorry about the delay

Was it an odd, muffled noise in the server room that you had to go investigate?

No... someone else heard something in the server room and it wasn't him, and he wasn't jacking off. Honestly.

Actually someone initiated a failover to our DR site without understanding all the implications

edit:

The amount of fucks ups we deal with here ... you know, if some upstart agile company comes and disrupts our industry and puts us out of business I'm won't be surprised at all.

It's not worth having a DR plan if you don't have fire drills, too. Looks like you're gonna have one whether you want it or not!

I'll have you know I understood *all* the implications before I triggered twdog's DR failover. He really ought to secure those logins better...

Sorry everyone, this has been a less then awesome weekend for me; I expected us to be starting days ago. Anyway, I'm going to temp fate and say we'll be up in the morning

Most things will auto fail over in a DR situation, but for some of our shitty less well behaved applications we have a DR process that is totally scripted, but needs a human to make the decision kick it off due to the difficulties involved in failing back. Someone to make the call on whether the situation justifies it or not, because once it's failed over it's an enormous pain in the ass to fail back. So in principal, someone could actually fail over the shitty apps while everything else hums along at the main site(s), because the shitty app migrator is a separate thing. But you aren't suppose to run the shitty app migrator unless you really have to, you know, if it's a full on disaster, not something minor like a misconfigured web.config that nobody was suppose to touch by hand anyway, because that's the point of having a dev\test\staging\prod cycle, damn it.

Moving on ...

We've been toying around with devops because that's what all the cool companies do these days. We're not cool, but like a middle aged pudgy accountant that just bought a red miata, we're under the delusion we could be cool. So here's the thing ... if you to do devops, it's a little more involved then just giving your low level code monkeys highly privileged access and crossing your fingers that it'll all work out.

These are related pieces of information.
