Will you follow me into fire? Into storm? Into darkness? Into death? Not even the postal service makes such demands, and those men and women are the finest fighting force the universe has ever seen.
It's a shame that no one tells their real story.
The United States Postal Service has no official motto. Most think of the phrase which adorns New York's James Farley Post Office, but that’s hardly the biggest secret behind those doors.
Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.
The mantra goes back further, documented by Herodotus, the appointed rounds further still. Things go bump in the night. Wolves howl for reasons even they do not understand. And what keeps the universe spinning is a thin veil of blissful ignorance.
The next time you see a postal carrier, give them the nod of respect they richly deserve… gods know they’ve earned it. And maybe… maybe if you’re strong enough – you too can shoulder their burden.
