TWG LXIII: Betrayal in a More Civilized Time - Signup here!

Postby twdog » 29 Nov 2013, 12:38:14

Sign up here for TWG LXIII starting on Friday, December 6th. This is a refinement of the game map concept and rules from TWG LVI “Werewolves of Innsmouth”

---

You contemplate its amber colour, slowly swishing the glass before taking a sip. There’s a rush of peat flavor, followed by oak and seaweed. An exquisite whisky indeed. An evening reading at the club with a fine cigar, a plush chair, a superior drink ... it is truly the little things that make life worth living.

That said, there most certainly are flies in this ointments. The latest periodicals aren't what you'd hope for. This copy of Punch contains little more of interest than Kipling’s The Earth Man’s Burden; a poem you've seen a dozen times over ... and it’s a reprint at that.

What’s more, the voices of the louder members certainly raise your ire; self important men holding court on matters they’ll never influence. Is this the Carlton or Reform clubs? No. Not that that stops anyone; you can't help but overhear them.

Over in the corner you've got old Major Wickham-Dorian (OBE and don’t you forget it!) carrying on about the new armored cruisers Germany was building for their Inner System Fleet. “By Jingo! That fool Kerr has no vision! If Fisher was 1st Naval Lord we’d send the blighters packing!” while the exasperated Lindsay tries to calm him “If the Kaiser wants to go tromping around the worthless bally steaming jungles of Venus then we ought to let him!”

I suppose that’s the other nuisance of this club, it’s hard to describe the thing exactly, but the members here sound a bit off ... like an American’s stereotype of how English gentlemen speak. A poorly informed American, no less. Odd, that.

Phipps chimes in ... “Quite so. Of all the alien worlds, Mars is the true jewel and it’s firmly in our hands. Germany scarcely has a presence there whereas we’ve had concessions there for decades now, the Queen is the Parhoon regent and Syrtis Major has been a Crown Colony for over 20 years. Our grasp is firm indeed.”

“Don't tell me things every schoolboy knows. You can’t count on the natives staying docile. The foreign powers aren't above agitating the natives! We all remember that messy business with Gordon in the Sudan. What’s more ...“ Linsay tries again ... “An uprising that was crushed easily I'll remind you. The Navy’s aerial Battleships proved their worth that day! I understand Kitchener is still miffed at victory being snached from him, but what would have happened in Khartoum while the Army marched through the desert I daren't guess.” ... Phipps starts to remind everyone how well traveled he is ... “Look here, I've’ve just returned from there myself, I'm often off world don't you know, and our native troops there are the finest on the planet. We saw a parade review of “1st battalion, Queen Victoria’s Own Martian Rifles (Parhoon)” and it was a ripping good show old man!”

But Wickham-Dorrien was unswayed ... “Queen’s Own Martian rifles (Parhoon) ? Humph. If we're not going to use humans we might as well have Queen’s Own Giant Spiders (Australian)! And then there’s the French up in Cydonia! They're fighting the High Martians for the liftwood groves, and if they win ... ”

“The French!? Haw! One must remember the class their leaders mostly come from. Their viceroy is the son of a tradesman I believe, hardly an inspiring choice. Of course, that's the French for you. Gallic irrationality is hardly surprising.”

You move to another seat away from the trio, hopefully to a more quiet place. Sadly, now you hear another pair arguing over the Armstrong/Edison aetheric engine patent suit. “Edison invented the means to ply the luminous aether! Edison led the first expedition to Mars in 1870! It was Edison that first saw the full potential of the Martian liftwood! And that scoundrel Armstrong is a thief of the highest order! ” ... the other responded: “Armstrong’s designs power the Royal Navy’s great fleets, whatever Edison did in the past, should we not acknowledge Armstrong’s perfection of the art?”

You sigh, it's still noisy, time to move to another chair. It’s not worth raising a complaint with the Club Members Committee; you’ll be leaving here soon, forever. Another interruption. For some reason, mindlessly cheerful Cardwell feels the need to disturb you just as you’re settling in again. “Oh hullo! I heard you put in your resignation, not some trouble with the senior members I hope?

“No, I’m leaving Earth for Syrtis, I don’t expect to return for some years.”

“Leaving London, for Mars? What the devil for?”

“Money dear boy. The whole place is ripe with opportunities. Full of valuable technology and undeveloped lands. The lazy decedent Canal Martians don’t understand what their great ancestors built. And let us not forget the liftwood groves of incalculable value. It's true enough that those mountains are full of High Martians, but good old Tommy Atkins can drive them out easily enough, I dare say!”

“Jolly good for you! Are you departing soon?”

“On the 6th. I'm flying out on the Birkenhead, it’s a new fast liner. It can make the transit in only 3 months.”

“Capital! The White Star line is first rate! Much better than Canard. Best of luck old man!”

He leaves, and then so do you. Out on the street you can see the mooring masts of the aether ships. You fancy you can even see part of the Birkenhead, but perhaps not. Whatever the faults of this club, I suppose you'll still miss it. But the future is on the red deserts of Mars and it’s full of possibilities.”

---

This game is based on the Space: 1899 RPG, and will start on Friday, December 6th. End of Day will be 7:00 PM MST and will start with a no lynch/no maul Day 0.

Sign up here to reserve your place on the RMS Birkenhead, you'll have a ripping good time, old boy!

(( IN ))

Oh boy, this will be my first spaceflight as a human! I will suffer severe psychological trauma after I look at the vast nothingness of space and realize how insignificant I am! I can't wait to experience the thrill of cabin fever after spending weeks with the same small group of people in an enclosed environment! Once I reach my destination, I will tell everybody I know that the trip was "fine" and that nothing unusual happened regardless of what transpires!

(( Nobody on Youtube had Mal's full set of quotes, so I had to make one myself

My other Youtube videos involve my two longest recent single-player obsessions. SMB is a great example of what happens to me when I play a game that has a leaderboard. ))

I'm IN for this one.

Not sure what, if anything, I'll do for this one character-wise. Fortunately, I've got time to ponder!

(Fair warning to everyone: I'm wrapping up a major project at work over the starting weekend, so my attention span will likely be minimal for the first day or two. Should be fine afterwards, though.)

Does anyone have a spare monocle-cleansing washrag? I seem to have left my monogrammed set at home, and the poxies on this craft refuse to polish my one-eye for any price. At least I managed to acquire a decent smoking chamber on-vessel. Mars, is it? Splendid. Absolutely splendid. Consider me in, of course, could never pass up a bit of enterprise, don't ya know?

I admire your grasp of euphemism, but you're changing the subject. I've flown from one side of this solar system to the other. I've seen a lot of crazy things, but I've never seen anything to make me believe there's one all-powerful force controlling everything. There's no mystical aether that controls my destiny.

Come now Kahn, (please put on a shirt). What did you in was the betrayal of the wolves from within, & I specifically wondered if you were engaging in a Thantos play to buy human credibility for you or ICB to bring one of you to the endgame. The real killer was that ICB and Ravebomb wanted to nuke the planet and form their own lovers nest. Besides, Chinese? I'll just be hungry again an hour later.

Or is this about those other times when I've killed you? http://twg2.thegranddespotoftheuniverse ... 26#msg4126

Seriously, and for the record, if you (or anyone) ever feel the need to kill me, I have no complaint so long as it's artistically done, embedded in RP, or advances your team's cause. If it's purely personal reasons, we're both doing it wrong. I hope you know I respect your game (even if it rarely shows).

On a side note, I may have to come up with a different RP this time around. I've already gone Solo, one might say to death. Steampunk Scoundrels (TM) have potential, but is it different ~enough~?

Why look to the scoundrels? I mean, sure, we'd all love to be Badger, but you're on an interstellar airship! There's room for Ether Engineers among the gentlefolk and soldiers. Heck, you could probably pull off a decent Agatha Heterodyne if you wanted too. :)

You got it wrong. No no. Vengeance will be from the vig shot you inflicted upon my persona in the Space Marines game. The shot will be sublime and the score will be settled once and for all. Eye for an eye. That is the law of Justice.

Obviously I will find/make up a juicy reason. A hollow revenge is not my style.

Well, Zarkowski, while I'm currently not in the desert (and indeed, not tied to any employer), I s'pose that I can see whatever my corporate overlords at Comcast let through their consumer internets.

Also: I like how rekard's vengeance RP is bleeding over into the pub. And that CHEST... :swoon:

My word! What an unusual collection of unsavory characters. Come, R2. It's time we were leaving.

I'd totally rock Jabba if I could stand to RP it for any length of time. Which I can't, and I'll be living for a while since I'm a confirmed human. :)

I don't think I could rock that Jabba. It reminds me too much of those things from Ep 1 or so that failed to kill JarJar at birth - the frog-people king, or whatever (I'm not working around the mental blocks I've put up for that movie).

Careful, TWdog tends to shoot the seer (I don't know his stance on Seer-bait, but I do recall a certain Shogoth didn't eat exactly the way everyone intended)

It's cool, he's the GM. He probably won't shoot me more than I earn.

Last map game I got triple-seered as a wolf in one night. I didn't last very long after that.

That was awesome because you suggested mauling MEM the night you got seered. If only they'd have listened to you ...

!!! GAME START QUESTION !!!

So looking at the dates, I've (already god damn it!!) made a mistake. We're set to start with Day 0 on Friday. This means that the no-kill Day 0 will end Saturday evening. Usually we make the weekend 48 hours for good reason. Do we want to leave it that way or change things?

I had planned to get the boards opened tomorrow (Thursday) but "officially" start things Friday. What I could do, is open the boards tomorrow anyway and end the Day 0 Friday night. This would basically make day 0 last 12 hours for people that don't show up until the official start date. This may not matter all that much, as Day 0 is no lynch/no maul. There are still night actions regardless.

Let me know what you all want to do

sorry, twdog

I think having a longer Day 0 is probably a good idea for the purposes of getting good Night 0 actions from everyone.

I think I'd even be in favor of ending Day 0 on Sunday.
