TWG LXXIX - Every Prophet in His House

Postby DastardlyOldMan » 05 Jan 2015, 08:33:38

Before the Beginning, after the great war between Heaven and Hell, God created the Earth and gave dominion over it to the crafty ape he called Man. And to each generation was born a Creature of Light and a Creature of Darkness... and great armies clashed by night in the ancient war between good and evil. There was magic then. Nobility. And unimaginable cruelty. And so it was until the day that a false sun exploded over Trinity, and man forever traded away wonder for reason.

The Dust Bowl - 1935. A wandering carnival troupe picks up a recently orphaned young man, while a Methodist preacher takes to the airwaves - and so continues the battle between the Avatars of Light & Darkness - a battle that spans generations without conclusion (this game will hopefully have a conclusion).

This will be a "mostly" vanilla game; while the theme lends itself well to a Special game, I couldn't get the roles to balance out in such a way that I was comfortable with. I have tweaked the special roles slightly as follows:

The seer will be a dual-role: one player (Apollonia) will choose the target; another player (Sofie) will get the results (target + affiliation) - yes, it's not quite canon with the end of the series, but Sofie doesn't know that. If either dies, the seer-ability is essentially neutralized. The two will not know one another's identity (I'm still waffling on that point a bit, though - I think that if Apollonia targets Sofie, they'll each be informed of the other's identity).

The vigilante and witch doctor roles will be combined, and will only work as a night action. In order to give life, you gotta take it away from someplace else. The vig/witch doctor (Ben Hawkins) will be able to protect someone, but only by killing someone else - he'll need to submit a protection target and a vigilante target, and once that succeeds, it's drained. He cannot restore life to himself. There will not be any other form of GA.

A quick note: Sign-up threads for upcoming games should be posted in the Pub. We move them into the Sign-Up subforum after the game has wrapped.

That said, IN.

Can we get a primer on the mythos underlying this game?

Also, what's your tentative starting date?

Hmmm, I normally like to start Day 1 on the Wednesdays, but that seems like a long time to wait. Let's go Day 1 on 12-January, 1 week from today, assuming that we've got a decent representation.

Mythology of Carnivale on wikipedia

This site also does a pretty good job of describing it. It's kind of hard to go into too much detail on the background, though - that's like asking someone to explain "Lost" after the end of the second season, except that the creator did publish some follow-on documents (which I haven't read, but are summarized on these sites a bit). It basically ties in a lot of vague religious concepts (the 1930's version of the Knights Templar, the Tarot, the Tree of Knowledge) into a slightly confusing set of dream sequences :)

Oh neat, things to read. I watched Carnivale, but it was quite a long time ago. It was sad that they decided to wrap the series instead of trying to make it work with a smaller budget after season 2.

And also, in.

As an FYI, apparently Carnivale is free to stream for Amazon Prime members. I don't know if it is as well for Netflix as I can't check that at work.

No - this one's going to be vanilla, although the flavor-text might mean more to you if you've seen the show. I can scribble down a basic cast-of-characters if it would help to set the mood, though, and I should be avoiding signficant spoilers (honestly, the OP probably has as many spoilers as the narrative will. . . )

The opening credits use the Tarot extensively, and one of the main characters is a tarot-reader by proxy, so they do feature into the show quite a bit.

Apollonia is in a catatonic state, but her daughter, Sofie, can communicate with her telepathically. Together they tell fortunes using Tarot cards. According to Sofie, it's her mom that does the reading.

Additional warning if you go watching the show. It's great stuff! Really, it is! But it also ends the series on a cliffhanger or epic and frustrating proportions. So, you know, brace yourself for that.

Non-spoiler partial cast of Carnivale (but in spoiler tags for size):
[+] characters
  • Ben Hawkins, a young Oklahoma farmer who is adopted by the carnival when his mother passes away. Ben has a fugitive past, as well as mysterious powers of healing. Works as a roustabout for the carnival.
  • Samson, a dwarf (before Tyrion, there was Samson). Samson manages the carnival, although he gets his orders from . . .
  • Management is an unknown, hidden away inside a trailer and never seen. Only Samson speaks to management.
  • Jonesy, an ex-baseball man with a crippled knee. Jonesy leads the roustabouts, and basically acts as Samson's second.
  • Apollonia, a comatose woman who can see the future. Only communicates via telepathy with her daughter . . .
  • Sofie, the voice of the Tarot-reading act, raised partly by the Carnivale because of her mother's condition.
  • Lodz, blind mentalist, lover of Absinthe and . . .
  • Lila, the bearded lady.
  • Felix Stumpy Dreifuss - hawker extraordinare, father/manager of the family cootch show.
  • Rita Sue Dreifuss - mother, cootch dancer, prostitute.
  • Libby & Dora Mae Dreifuss - daughters, cootch dancers, prostitutes.
  • Ruthie - snake charmer and barker, mother figure to much of the carnival, mother of . . .
  • Gabriel - mentally challenged strongman
  • Gecko - the Lizard Man, covered in scales, but very much the gentleman.
  • Alexandria and Caladonia Potter - conjoined twins, dancers and musicians.
  • Brother Justin Crowe, a Methodist minister out of Mintern, California. Justin is a true believer, and receives visions leading him to assist the displaced migrant workers streaming into California.
  • Iris Crowe, Brother Justin's sister.
  • Tommy Dolan, radio host from LA who wanders the rails collecting nomadic stories for his radio show.
  • Reverend Normal Balthus - mentor and father figure to Brother Justin and Iris Crowe.
  • Varlyn Stroud - convict, contract killer, not a particularly nice person.
  • Hank "Hack" Scudder" - a figure who appears in Ben's and Brother Justin's dreams - either as a soldier in WWI or in a tuxedo, former member of the carnival, accused of various crimes including murder.
  • Lucius Belyakov - another figure who appears in dreams regularly as a Russian Soldier in WWI.
