Day 0 - A Place To Hang Your Hat

Postby sphenodont » 31 Jan 2014, 07:04:35

Welcome to Miller's Hollow! It's a quiet, out-of-the-way town — a nice place to raise your children well away from the hustle and bustle of city life, but without resigning them to a life where their only playmates would be the livestock. It's the very picture of a picturesque village, like something out of a Norman Brickwell painting.

But beneath the bumpy streets and the painted-on smiles, there is a darkness deep down. These walls are just a cobbled-together facade, and if you look deeper, you'll see that they're just props masking a greater emptiness. This town has known a sadness unimaginable to outsiders.

Most people here in Miller's Hollow have heard the whispers, the rumors, the allegations. They can't be certain how much is true and how much is fancy, but it can't all be old wives' tales. There are too many clues to this town's past to ignore. There's the field on the edge of town where the ears of corn are all shaped like heads, the strange cackles at night coming from the history museum that's in the Old Jailhouse, and most curious of all, the giant statue of a chicken in the center of the town square.

Still, for all it's occasional creepiness, life is good in Miller's Hollow. And hey, Founder's Day is coming up later this week. That's definitely a cause for celebration, right?

If you need me, I'll be over here building a gazebo.

Gazebo for everyone.

We shouldn't fight like this. Let's work this out proper and make friends again. :)

I'll build you some gazebos if you do.

Also, can we start voting for Sheriff or do we have to wait until we get our roles? Because I nominate myself.

Voting for sheriff starts after roles are sent out.

I'm assuming there'll be a vote reset when Spheno officially starts things. That's what happened in his shotgun game. ;)

Miller's Hollow was (mostly) filled by actual human beings, with complex emotions and strained psyches. There were no easy answers to the questions we found, because those who went before choose to leave them unasked.

I thought briefly about the statue of the chicken. Built, brick by brick by ancient hands? An odd thing about the chicken - everyone knew it was there, but ask them to close their eyes, and no one would describe it the same way - almost as if they'd taken it for granted, but never really looked at it...

I closed my eyes, and described my chicken:
[+] thats what she said

I couldn't be sure yet what it meant, but I had a feeling we were going to find out. I closed my eyes, again... I had learned long ago that if I focused, if I gave the world a slight push, sometimes answers would manifest, although rarely as I expected them. As if in response, there was a voice:

The word from friend Sphenodont was this place was vanilla. Everyone couldn't be special, just like Dferrantino couldn't be sheriff. That honor would wait until the thread opened, when it would likely go to Clearasday (not a vote), for... historical reasons.

Welcome to Ozy, Nitestorm, Smirker, and AVS! I think that rounds us out, and it means we're adding the Cupid/Lovers. Please see the rules thread for the updated role info.

Role PMs are going out shortly. There will be five or six wolves in this game.

Re: Day 0 - A Place To Hang Your Hat

Postby sphenodont » 31 Jan 2014, 20:39:05

The town was buzzing with excitement over the upcoming festival. Lawns were being carefully manicured, cars were being rebuilt, and everyone was putting a shiny, positive face forward toward the next week's activities.

That all changed overnight.

Perhaps it was a mistake or maybe it was just Plain Ugly Fate, but somehow, no one was surprised when good ol' Farmer Joe (the most recent in a long line of Farmer Joes) was found vivisected in front of the public library, along with a neatly-typed note which read "He was a bit tough, but a good coffee rub really brought out all the right notes!"

The town elders did what could be rightfully expected of them. They ventured into the old, dusty jailhouse and dug out an even dustier tome: the Miller's Hollow town charter. They read it aloud to the assembled village:

"In case of werewolf attack (and if you're wondering, this is a werewolf attack), elect a Sheriff, and commission him to lynch someone every day until all the wolves are gone."

The elders set up polling stations, cleared out the armory, and ventured deep into the depths of the Town Archive and retrieved... The Sombrero of Destiny.

Then, while no one was looking, they packed their bags and booked it out of town.

GM Note: It's time to elect a Sheriff! Remember, votes can be retracted and moved around. The only rule is that you can't place the first vote for yourself. (Someone else has to nominate you first.)Also, the Cupid needs to send me their picks for the Lovers.

Day Zero will continue through the weekend and end on Sunday night. Day 01 will start at 9:00 PM Central US time on Sunday. (Yes, I know there's that whole Superbowl thing going on.)

There will be no Night Zero mauls or seerings.

I don't see any compelling reason to rush this. Let's see a few votes, first. No Sheriff today.

Also, I must be missing something. The Hunter rules seem like he can claim, be a guaranteed human, and there's no drawback. If he's mauled, he takes a wolf with him. What am I misunderstanding that might make it dangerous to claim? Maybe wait until Day 1 if you'd rather not be Cupidized, but early claim nonetheless?

If he claims, then the wolves leave him alone and don't die, like they did last time around. Instead, they eat the Seer and the Witch and all the other valuable targets instead.

The Hunter is there to make the wolves nervous about hunting for specials.

Understood, but that puts one green on the chart, and also means the Seer finds wolves faster. Both are good things, I would think. And you could elect him sheriff without worrying you'd given it to the wolves.

I didn't expect to have you chime in, Spheno. ;)

Also, I'm not sure what "hunting for specials" means. Isn't that another word for "mauling people," which isn't going to stop with one target more or less?

Keeping my sheriff vote in place for myself. Because I am 100% villager now. As you will undoubtedly find out when I get mauled on night 1.

Side note, Swype recognized "mauled" as "naked". I don't think you want to see me naked on night 1...

Wasn't the Sheriff's life expectancy about ~30 minutes in the last game?

Why didn't the Witch just protect the Sheriff in the last game?

Also, GM, can the Witch target the same player on consecutive nights (assuming her power wasn't used on the first night)?

Don't we want the Sheriff to be someone who'll consistently be around at EOD so they can snipe with their double vote and break ties if they occur?

Neither dferrantino nor Clearasday seem to fit that profile.

Re: Day 0 - A Place To Hang Your Hat

After much deliberation, I think we can all unanimously agree that Nitestorm would be the only logical choice as Sheriff. Think about it, its obvious that he would tirelessly work to eliminate the Ozymandias threat once and for all. What other candidate will show this kind of dedication? As an added bonus, our wonderful days under his ironfisted rule gallant leadership will be filled with nothing but abject terror peaceful tranquility and banquets of only the freshest human wolf meat.

As a simple humble villager with no significance what so ever, I implore our residents to give his life meaning for once more. No one needs to fear Ozymandias when he's around. As an added bonus, he might even prove effective against those darn wolves. :flail:

That's not a bad Day 0 strategy.

Neither, I think, is making someone who suggests a reasonable strategy the first sheriff: Admetus

Ozymandias and Ademtus are already collaborating? Nothing good can come from this. Something feels furry to me. :o

Answer: I play every game as myself.

((I give HH's androids the voice of UT2004's cybernetic competitors. IDK why.))

I'd like to submit Nitestorm for sheriff, because Nitestorm.

I am interested in your ideas and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

Nitestorm for Sheriff; nothing will keep these werewolves on their toes like the element of surprise, and I don't think anyone surprises us quite like Nitestorm.

The Sheriff's power seems far more useful near the latter half of the game when we have a clearer idea of who is Human and every vote counts. Right now having a Sheriff only means we're giving the Wolves an opportunity to be the tie-breaker and also giving them 1 more vote.

No Sheriff

No Sheriff

Statement: It is unlikely that everyone will follow your lead, although your reasoning is sound.

Commentary: Not to mention that if everyone else voted "no sheriff," Ravebomb would vote for himself.

"No Sheriff" doesn't have to be unanimous-- it's a candidate just like any other, and simply needs a plurality to "win".

Some of you, those voting no sheriff (not a vote), are the worst kind of gamblers. It seems generally well advised for a vig to never take an early game shot because the odds are against hitting a wolf; however, when those same kind of odds flip to favor human gain, still some of you don't want to take the chance on it?!

I don't think no sheriff requires unanimous consent; its listed as a valid voting option in the rules thread so I think it would just require a majority like any other option.

I'm all for getting a few more days in before we hand the power off.

Edit: Had this typed before I saw Ryvvn's post. Since there will be an election every day until we have a sheriff, I don't think we're giving up much by not choosing now. The sheriff power increases as the game goes on; we'll be sacrificing the utility of a sheriff during his least useful days in exchange for a more educated decision later.

I propose myself as a sheriff, because I would be an awesome sheriff and the wolves would be scared cats urging to maul and save the seer for one more day.

Also I have a boweltastic hangover, so vote me and I will make your dreams come true.

If you disagree, well bite me and shaddap. Going back to my comfy bed.
