Day 1: The Festival

Postby FurinMirado » 23 Feb 2014, 18:31:15

There are thousands of spiders in your home. There are thousands of spiders in your walls. They come out…as soon as you are asleep. Welcome…to Night Vale.

John Peters, you know the farmer, is reporting dark shapes skulking around the edge of town, howling at the moon and leaving shredded remains of wild animals all over the place. Now, I don’t know about you listeners, but it is just common courtesy to properly dispose of your sacrificial goats, lambs, what have you, after every night spent in your bloodstone circle. I mean, come on. Those kinds of things attract flies you know. It’s just not sanitary. And this howling at the moon has got to stop. Some of us have to get up early!

Oh, the new station intern, Jamie, has just handed me a note. It’s from the City Council. They would like you to know that the moon does not actually exist. We should all stop talking about it and thinking about it. After all, what’s the point in even thinking about something that doesn’t exist? Exactly. The City Council also wishes to announce that those individuals spending their nights howling at something that doesn’t exist should immediately report for mandatory government re-education in a secret, undisclosed location.

Of course we all know that location to be the abandoned mineshaft just outside of town where all dissidents end up. It’s pretty common knowledge that if you vote incorrectly, the Sheriff’s Secret Police will kidnap your loved ones and hold them until such a time as you learn to vote correctly. We thank the City Council for this educational opportunity.

Ah, it looks like we have a visitor in the studio. Is it one of the hooded figures? No he just appears to be wearing a wide-brimmed hat, which casts an almost supernatural darkness around his face. And he is handing me a slip of paper. It reads: “We are the Werewolves. We will maul someone every night until satisfied. None shall stop us. The streets shall run with blood…”

It kind of goes on like that for a while doesn’t it? Oh, dear listeners, he has disappeared as quickly as he came. It appears that our very lives are in danger, Night Vale. I advise everyone to cocoon themselves in their homes. Do NOT come out under any…

Intern Jamie has another note for me. Another message from the City Council:

“There are no Werewolves. There is no moon so how could there be Werewolves? You actually thought there were Werewolves? How silly you are! There are, however, a group of individuals in dire need of mandatory government re-education.”

It goes on to say that there will be…a festival! For the next week or so, the City Council will be holding a festival in the streets. Everyone is to keep a close eye on his or her neighbors at this time, for every evening a vote will be held. It is at this time, and this time only, that the City Council will lift their ban on writing utensils so that everyone may put someone’s name into a cauldron. The person with the most votes will be taken away by the Sheriff’s Secret Police.

So…there we have it Night Vale. If the City Council believes it is safe to be in the streets then they must be right! I say, enjoy yourselves Night Vale! You’ve earned it! But don’t forget to pick someone for tonight! I highly recommend Steve Carlsberg who we all know is a big jerk anyway.

So for now, good night, Night Vale, good night.

The sounds is creates make me almost sure that it is, in fact, there.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

I suppose the best strategy is a completely random vote. So facilitate this in as fair a manner as possible, I closed my eyes and just randomly, without any form of bias, thought of a name. That turned out to be one known as Ozymandias, by total random coincidence. I believe it would be in all our interests to randomly vote for Ozymandias as well, for the good of us all.

If I were really anal-retentive, I could totally even out the spacing using a combination of REPT, " ", and a SUM function involving LEN's. I have a feeling I'll be doing this tonight.

Might need to wrap it in code tags though. ))

The smell of curry leaves wafts enticingly through the air.

For a moment, there are no aliens. No Illuminati, no hidden spies. No werewolves scratching, no vampires chuckling, no creatures of the night hemming and hawing.

Kid's never seen a town like this. Cats swarming like packs of squirts, 'cept their leaders can talk. Leastwise that's what the Kid said, and he ain't lied to me yet.

Nothing he talks to knows about the Bastion. Hell, they don't even care that he fell out of the sky. They're worried about their own troubles. Some are wound up so tight, feels like they'll snap at any moment. Kid can't tell why...until he hears the radio.

This town makes the Ura seem downright pleasant.

Khoshekh purrs pleasantly at the soft, soothing, no-need-to-worry words of the day's opening....

Though shortly thereafter, Khoshekh rears and hisses at Admetus' demonic visage; yet he knows it undignified to outright attack such a previously unlucky soul this early, so he shall ignore that particular horror for a day or two. However, Khoshekh need not rely on instinct to plainly see one overly confident monster not even attempting to hide its true identity, and he flicks his tail toward dferrantino.

Ever have one of those days where you just go off at everything around? Pretty sure I started one of those today, not going to be good in the long run. I'm also pretty sure my friend Blindsniper83 is a canine of some kind. Actually I'm not, sure of anything. But I attacked him, and that's all I need.

The pickup wasn't anything to write home about. Boy goes to bar. Boy has a few drinks. Boy meets girl. Boy and girl have a few drinks. Boy takes girl home. Nothing out of the ordinary to suggest the direction the night would go. Sure, she had that look: the crazy glint in the eyes and the carefully-placed smirk that made you certain that she was ninety-five pounds of trouble, and worth every ounce of it.

Her dress slipped off almost too easily, but I wasn't expecting her to be wearing a fur coat underneath -- Nah -- I can't even talk about it yet. It was just a little weird, but was it too weird? Still trying to figure out which side of the line it fell on: kinky or perverted.

The important thing is, earlier in the night, when I was still paying close attention to make her think I was the kind of ami that pays attention, she was talking about a friend of hers, guess they used to go hunting together in the bayou. Hindsight and all, but damn, should've seen that coming. Still, the name stuck - you don't forget a name like Visigoth none too easy.

Don't follow my lead on him, though, I like his RP.

Nobody tells me who not to follow! Except Hiram McDaniels, literally a five-headed dragon who cares. And also the City Council. And the Sheriff's Secret Police. And maybe Strexcorp.

Being a citizen in Night Vale is hard.

But I do know this: Outsiders cannot be trusted. Outsiders with their own third-person narration especially cannot be trusted. If there's someone to blame for this non-moon-related non-werewolf wolf-like plague thing, it is definitely Hellheart.

So we make it through both Ragnarok and the Sochi Olympics relatively unscathed (a few less hours sleep and several new grey hairs aside), only to run up against A Vague, Yet Menacing, Government Agency. I'm told they keep a close eye on Night Vale, but are distinct from the Sheriff's Secret Police.

I guess what really bothers me is how Cecil always calls the agency 'a vague, yet menacing, government agency' and the use of the indefinite article means that there may very well be more than one vague, yet menacing, government agency operating in Night Vale... but if so, one agency is indistinguishable from another.

It feels like day 1 again. Sonny & Cher on the radio, and another opportunity to set forth into the world and see what we shall see. Maybe I'll even change my avatar, but I'll have to catch up first.

More in a bit,

That static between the broadcasts is calling was Rictus's name. Which is odd since it usually cries Mary.
