Day 1 - Meeting Your Maker

Postby dferrantino » 23 Mar 2014, 20:49:47

The doors open, and you walk out into a large auditorium. A stout man in a top hat stands on stage, and beckons you all to sit. Once all 19 of you have taken a seat, be begins his presentation:

"Welcome, everyone! I'm sure you're wondering where you are and how you got here, but that's not the important part. What's important is what you're meant to do here. We're going to play a little game. At the end of this game, the winners will have their wildest dreams made reality, though the losers will not be as fortunate.

"We have here a very interesting assortment of characters. Most of you are simple people, plucked from your lives and placed here in a possibly-quite-fortunate turn of events. But some of you are far more interesting. Among you is a telepath, able to see into the minds of others; a soldier, brought in with his gun for who-knows-what reason; and my favorite of all: five werewolves.

"The game is simple: every day you will vote for one player to be removed from the house. The game will end when either there are no werewolves left, or the werewolves outnumber the rest of you and can safely come out of hiding.

"Oh, but there's one small problem here...this house prevents you from knowing which side you're on. Good luck!"

Game's taking way longer to generate than it did last time. PMs will be out at some point in the next hour, hopefully.

Additionally, starting today I'll need both Seer and Maul targets from everyone who's still eligible. Same PM for both, please.

Interesting.

So what should I do? Should I seize the chance?

Through this identity crisis, I have made my choice. Alive and dead at the same time, the chance to be a hero is there.

I write his name in my book.

I execute 7-Zark-7. This is a vigilante shot.

Oh no he didn't. Oh yes he did.

So I guess we vote for people who are bold enough to speak up? Acceptable. I should by all rights vote for myself, then, but I will instead move to execute rekard. I mean, he's already shot at someone with a gun he may or may not have who is statistically likely to be a human, so I'm just hypothetically punishing a hypothetical vigilante for hypothetically killing a hypothetical innocent, right? I think? Am I doing this right?

Haha, this is gonna be nuts.

Hello Rekard, you're looking well. Getting enough fiber in your diet? Good, good.

There are those who would suggest I now waste my shot - to fling forward on some short sighted goal in the hopes of eliminating a rival.

But you and I, we are not rivals. At least, we don't have to be.

Normally, about this time, I would be casting a vote for Rekard. But... I don't want Rekard to resolve just yet. I want him to see me live, day after day, each wondering if his shot was good enough to take me out, or if he's been shooting blanks all this time.

One things humans are very good at is pattern recognition. It actually accounts for most reports of the occult over the years. Take dowsing rods, for example.

Dowsing as practiced today originated in Germany during the 15th century, when it was used in attempts to find metals. As early as 1518 Martin Luther listed dowsing for metals as an act that broke the first commandment (i.e., as occultism - Martin ~loved~ his lists, and you'd be hard pressed to find a door not covered with his thoughts of the day at any particular time. This was before Facebook and Twitter, thankfully). The 1550 edition of Sebastian Münster's Cosmographia contains a woodcut of a dowser with forked rod in hand walking over a cutaway image of a mining operation. The rod is labelled "Virgula Divina – Glück rüt" (Latin: divine rod; German "Wünschelrute": fortune rod or stick), but there is no text accompanying the woodcut. By 1556 Georgius Agricola's treatment of mining and smelting of ore, De Re Metallica, included a detailed description of dowsing for metal ore.

In 1662 dowsing was declared to be "superstitious, or rather satanic" by a Jesuit, Gaspar Schott, though he later noted that he wasn't sure that the devil was always responsible for the movement of the rod. In the South of France in the 17th Century it was used in tracking criminals and heretics. Its abuse led to a decree of the inquisition in 1701, forbidding its employment for purposes of justice.

So, let me set the record straight right here & now. I never moved any German's rod. Nor other nationalities. But it goes back to pattern recognition, & the amazing capabilities of the human brain. Think of the calculus necessary to catch a ground ball, twist in the air and throw it for the double play. Even if the eye could track trajectory of the ball off the bat, the variables of spin and impact with the ground are too numerous to credit the eye or reflex alone.

So it is with dowsing. Certain trees grow stronger in the presence of an aquifer, others suffer with too much groundwater. Aquifers tend towards certain rock formations, which are defined by their mineral content. So an observant man (woman, child, what have you) may know the structure of the ground beneath his feet, simply by looking at the trees over his head. He does not give it conscious thought, indeed, doing so rather breaks the process, much like the ball player. This can also manifest in subconscious motion of the hands which steer a rod when the desired substance is underfoot, or slightly different shuffles of a deck of cards.

Spare the rod & spoil the child, use the rod & get burnt at the stake as a witch. The same for tarot, or for gazing into a fire or the ashes left behind, giving your subconscious mind a canvas upon which to paint.

My point, rather the entire point, is that there is no random. Not really. There is action, and reaction. And MEM broke the pattern at the start of the day.

I do not claim to know what he sees. But I know a Blindsniper sees little, yet still manages to hit his target.

At least some of the time.

Just don't let him stand behind you.

So without benefit of any automation (seriously, why haven't I gotten around to that), I see the following:

Nitestorm - 2 - FurinMirado, Okaros
DastardlyOldMan - 2 - Rekard, Necklessone
BlindSniper83 - 2 - Mister E. Meat, 7-zark-7
FurinMirado - 1 - stigmata
stigmata - 1 - Meta4
Meta4 - 1 - Sphenodont
7-zark-7 - 1 - DastardlyOldMan
Perry the Platypus Sphenodont - 1 - Hellheart
rekard - 1 - That PJ
Ryvvn - 1 - Admetus
FurinMirado - 1 - Nitestorm

Vig usage: Rekard wasted his shot on me.

Alternatively, I can probably get myself to copy everything over to my clean workbook sometime tonight, which is probably the better way to go but you won't have it today.

Either way, if you're interested PM me.

I'll get around to fully optimizing it sometime, but I have a lot more impetus for figuring out how to do something via spreadsheet coding than for going through all of the steps to optimize the monsters I've created. ))

FurinMirado - 1 - stigmata

I thought I killed my evil duplicate when I brained him with that stapler. Apparently he's in this game or Zark's vote count needs work.

I will move my vote to blindsniper in order to help protect Furin. . . yeah, that's it. Just protecting Furin. Totally not a wolf-move.

So here I am experiencing an awkward moment and I must say I'm not sure I like it. I blame it on Hellheart since I'm sure I'd enjoy an awkward moment.

Stay undefined my friends.

Oh look, somebody's blaming the Drusselsteinian for a completely unrelated situation! This is something I've never seen on the internet! I'm sure people are going to take this accusation very seriously.

I know you're rolling your eyes, Perry the Platypus.

My vote count needs work, and you did kill your evil duplicate. He turned out to be an amazing bartender in the afterlife. Seriously, you should try his Long Island (not a euphemism).

Correcting the tally:
FurinMirado - 3 - stigmata, Nitestorm, aldax
BlindSniper83 - 3 - Mister E. Meat, 7-zark-7, dastardlyoldman
Nitestorm - 2 - FurinMirado, Okaros
DastardlyOldMan - 2 - Rekard, Necklessone
Ryvvn - 2 - Admetus, rictus
stigmata - 1 - Meta4
Meta4 - 1 - Sphenodont
Perry the Platypus Sphenodont - 1 - Hellheart
rekard - 1 - That PJ
hellheart - 1 - Visigoth
7-zark-7 - 0 - DastardlyOldMan

Vig usage:
7-zark-7 -1- Rekard
Stigmata -1- FurinMirado

Guys, I really don't even like the idea that there's a chance of Furin going down on day 1. :( Day 2, maybe, but come on.
PJ's general resignation towards fate is good enough. -Okaros
Then he went and shot himself, saved me and got himself lynched because of it. You magnificent fool! -Mister E. Meat

RaveBomb making a lot of sense is how you know you're past the point of no return and that death is the only escape.

blindsniper83, because lynching Furin today is bad form. Not your fault, sniper, but you're the best alternate right now.

nitestorm to keep things away from furin, and for pushing that furin wagon to 2 in the first place.
